The great pumpkin hunt! It all started 10 years ago when we came out to Iowa to visit my parents around Halloween time. They took us to a far away pumpkin farm. It had pumpkins galore, goats, ostrich (which Keith has a bad rap with), turkeys and more turkeys and a couple pigs. And a massive amount of funky gourds!! A really neat place to go with lots of spots to take pictures with their pumpkin and gourd creations. Plus SUPER cheap prices!!! I can't recall the price per pound of pumpkin back in 1998, but I'm thinking it was 10¢ or 15¢, yeah that cheap!! And today 10 years later they are still cheap at only 25¢ a pound! It's so nice to be able to go to this place and let the kids pick out ANY pumpkin they want and not pay more than $6 or so! We have gone to this pumpkin farm every year for the past 10 years! The kids love it, Kaden loves pulling the wagon, Salem loves picking out his pumpkin, any size! I think Keith loves messing with the ostrich. I love the fun, and the weird gourds (although I've never bought any).
I thought this year might be the year we missed out. We haven't really had a free weekend to go to this place. We decided tonight we we go right when Keith got home from work. Now it starts getting dark about 6pm and by 6:30 it's black and it takes us 45 minutes to get there. Keith had to drive a bit faster and hope we didn't get stuck behind farm equipment. And we had to hope they were still open after dusk!
Ah, no probs! Arrived and another car pulled up too, although they were there and gone in 5 minutes. We took our time. Kaden pulled the wagon, Salem was wandering around. Keith found his right away, a big fat round one.

Kaden was looking for a tall skinny one without a flat back. I went for a smaller one this year, considering last year I had the biggest one ever! I found a cute short round one. Salem was last to find a pumpkin. We went up and down the driveway, in and out the rows and groups of pumpkins find the one for him. He settled on a tall one like Kaden. I picked up a couple "pie" pumpkins to decorate the front porch railing and the boys each got a small one too. After we paid for the pumpkins...which is all on the honor system. They have a scale...which now shows the weight and price, and you total it all up on a scratch sheet of paper, then put your money in a tin can sitting on the shelf. We headed off to see the animals.

Oh wait, no the kids found some indian corn. Even though the corn has been there every year, this year it must have been calling their name! They have a wagon loaded with the stuff so I let the kids dig around and pick 3 ears each. They were 3/$1. I also got 3, such neat colors!!! Kaden went for the tiny cranberry colored ones, Salem got a wide variety of them and I picked a dark cranberry (almost black looking) one and multi colored and a yellow and black one (to give to his Hawkeye fan teacher). Not sure what they are going to do with theirs, but oh well.

So now we headed to the animals. They've got 3 goats which Kaden was insistent they were the fainting goats and tried scaring them. No fainting! And I yelled at him for trying to scare the poor goats. Salem was disappointed Miss Piggy and friend were not in their pen. Don't know if they moved inside at night or it was too cold or what, but they weren't there right then. This place has a huge pen filled with turkeys...think Thanksgiving dinner! And boy are they loud! We walked up and they all came running to greet us. In the pen are 2 Emu's and an Ostrich! Now Keith and the Ostrich don't get along too well. The one they have now has been there since 2003. The one in 1998 did not like Keith's red hat he wore and tried bitting it off! So even though it's a new ostrich, Keith and it "have a history" and they are both after each other, lol. It's always a fun time, the ostrich will come right up to you...we stand back of course and you can have a stare down with it. It's a cool creature!

The emu's could care less, they roam about. I also did not see the BIG Tom turkey...wonder who's table he was on last year! He very well could have been inside the barn, but previous years he has also come out to greet us. There are ducks galore roaming the yards, even though they are in the fence, they're smart and know how to climb out. This year they had a peacock too. We saw it on our drive in, but when we went to find it, we couldn't. It was dark at that point and we had to get a couple annual pics and be on our way. Plus it was really really cold!
I'm trying to find pictures from the past 10 years going there. I also want the kids to send a note to the owners telling them about the fun we've had over the past 10 years. Such a great place to go!!
The pumpkin tally...
Salem's weighed 20.89 lbs
Kaden's 18.73
Keith's 23.88
Angy's 13.94
Grant total of 77.44 pounds of pumpkin! And that doesn't count the 6 little ones we bought too.
