Saturday was Spooky Cross cyclocross race in Urbandale. Salem and Keith both raced...separate times. Salem finished 16th out of 17 finishers. 20 started but 2 did not finish. Salem was the last one out on the course before Keith's race started. All the Cat 3/4 guys were waiting at the line to start. As Salem crossed the finish line, Mark the official had all the guys standing there cheer Salem on! It was too cool! Thanks Mark! That race was SO muddy, Salem was coated, his bike was covered in mud, gross!! Oh Salem did 4 laps!! He got lapped on the 2nd lap, but was able to hold off being lapped again. He was the 2nd Junior (out of 2). They were supposed to break it down into Juniors 10-14 and 15-18, but they lumped them all together. Oh well, no big deal. Salem ended up winning $20 as a prize because they didn't have prizes for them. Usually it's some bike goodies, juniors don't win cash.
Keith's race went well. Chris a fellow HBA rider also raced Saturday, so it was fun to cheer both guys on. Chris finished 14th and Keith finished 15th. Chris did not get lapped, but Keith did. So Keith ended up doing 6 laps. There was 37 finishers in their group. Keith was not nearly as muddy as Salem was.
Sunday...oh boy, today was horrible! It was really a different word, but I'm not sure if I can say such bad words on here. So I'll say it was horrible...and that's just from a spectators view! The racers had it much worse! It was COLD and WINDY! Windy was an understatement! Winds sustained at 40mph and gusts OVER 50mph!!! Yeah try riding in that...heck try standing in those kinds of winds, not too easy!!! But Salem still wanted to race in it. They changed the race course and it was much longer!! Salem ended up getting lapped and only did 2 laps. He finished 19th out of 20 finishers and I believe it was 22 that started. He was the 3rd Junior (out of 3). He got to chose his prize (they brought some stuff) and he picked a headlight for his bike! Good choice since he rides cross with dad and last week they ended up riding home at dusk. So he can be safer now. Oh the mud did dry out a tiny bit, but Salem still found it all to step and ride through!
Keith was the only HBA guy today. He was the first oen to the barriers, which was cool. Yesterday he got stuck behind a lot of guys and had to fight his way through. Today he had the "hole shot". Bike term for first one out. Kaden got too cold and sick of trying to stand in the wind, so he stayed in the car the whole race while Salem and I walked all over watching Keith. Man that course was huge! At one point Keith was sitting in 20th place, but he was able to climb his way up and finish 17th out of 34 today!
Lots of great racing going on, wish Sunday would have been a bit nicer though! Keith has more on his race on his blog you can check out. I'm working on pics. Sent Salem's 1st race out, but need to get the rest up too. That probably won't be until Tuesday as tomorrow is very busy for us again. And it's too late tonight, I'm exhausted.
