Ever since we found out Salem would be starting band this year I was so excited! I LOVED band when I was in school. I played percussion and it was a blast! Keith played trombone for a few years too, but he didn't like it I guess. At Salem's school they try out a few instruments and pick their 2 favorites and the teacher chooses one of them for the kid. Salem's 2 instruments...clarinet and trumpet. No percussion?? He says he doesn't want to play that because they have practice after school some days. Um hello kid, you have to practice your instrument whether it's at school or not! I was so disappointed! After all my bothers and sister played percussion it seemed natural he would too...or I had hoped. But no, he doesn't want to do after school practicing. Oh well, I'm over it, it's his 1st year, he can always change his mind :) So the meeting last night they have 2 music stores there competing for our business.
Finally after everyone is done talking, we get to separate and find out what the kids get to play!
Drum roll...(that's not even funny though)...Salem is playing the clarinet! He wanted to play it. It's a great instrument, lots of notes to play, and you have a finger spot for each note, don't have to guess about it. I know Uncle Derek, Uncle Donnie and Uncle Pat all played it, in fact we're going to be using Uncle Donnie's/Uncle Pat's clarinet. Grandma Snoop still has it. We just need to rent one until it gets here and can be checked out to make sure it is still okay to play. It'll probably need new pads and such, hoping it's not too expensive. I saw one quote that was $200 for that, ouch! But we'll see! I'm going tomorrow to see about renting one and getting all the goodies it needs.
It was fun going around talking to the other kids seeing what they got. We know 1 boy who is playing the flute, 2 with the tuba, a girl playing the trumpet, um who else did we talk to. Oh another boy is playing the clarinet too. He wanted to be in percussion, but it interfered with his after school sports practice. At least he has a good excuse. I know Salem talked to more than we did.
They start band class on the 15th! He's excited, so I'm happy! And Kaden gets to play the recorder in his music class this year too. So lots of music going on!
